So here in Seattle we've had our once-every-three-years major snowstorm this week. Every time this happens people take the opportunity to toboggan, in particular on Queen Anne Hill, which is a residential neighborhood just north of downtown Seattle.
Tsk tsk, said King-TV reporter Meg Coyle, too dangerous, and at least wear a helmet.
But a courageous Seattle mom confronted the reporter during a live remote. "Total complete killjoy..you've ruined it," said the mom, because Seattle Police showed up to shut down the fun after the report.
It was the talk of Seattle radio, and conservative/libertarian Dori Monson fielded calls from both the mom and the reporter, and he concluded that the mom had it right. The reporter complained that everyone already knew about the sledding, and the shutdown was not her fault. All she did was make it a major news story on Seattle's top TV news station. Monson also pointed out that the reporter was taking a chance by standing so close to the street in such icy conditions to get her money shot.
Kudos to the Seattle Mom; I believe her name is Tina something, but I'm not sure. I listened to her call into the Monson show while pounding out intervals on a treadmill. Anyway, whatever her name, we need more like her if we are to survive as a people. Video: KING 5 ruins fun for this snow tuber - The Dori Monson Show - MyNorthwest.com
Update on dustup. Monson has put up both the call from the Seattle mom Nicole (not Tina as I mistakenly said), and the interview with the reporter Meg Coyle. AudioClip - Podcasts - MyNorthwest.com
Nicole explains a lot of the context. King 5 had been pushing this story all day, with Coyle lamenting the fact that police were driving by and doing nothing to stop the illegal sledding activity. When a couple of cop cars with 4 offficers finally showed up to shut it down, they explained to the sledders that they had been sent out in response to the King 5 stories. As Nicole puts it, no cop signs up to become sledding police.
In the interview, the reporter tries to excuse herself basically by saying 'Everyone was talking about this, why is it all my fault?' The interviewer pretty much lets her slide. Where's Newt Gingrich when you need him.
Just why is it that the media seems to love these nannyist crusades so much? Whether it's smoking, prostitution, gun control, or sledding, the MSM seems to love a good old fashioned banning. Anybody have any ideas as to why this is???
I think it has more to do with the fact that this woman went on local TV and basically set out to try and kill harmless fun that everybody was having. It's like the Homeowner's Association nazi who reports anyone who's grass is taller than 3/4".

King 5 is MSM?
Just like Atlas Shrugged was a hit movie.....
A big zero on both.
Just wait for the complaining (and lawsuits) when some kid gets hit by a car, after sliding into traffic.

King 5 is the Seattle NBC affiliate. If that is not MSM I don't know what is. What would you call it?
As for frivolous lawsuits, as the lady states, they've been doing this for 10 years (actually doubtless long before that). No lawsuits yet, AFAIK. Anyway, frivolous suits and the need for tort reform is whole nother topic.

When you work there your paycheck comes from Belo, not NBC. Their news is independent of NBC. They are not owned by NBC. They in the past, has carried affiliated programming by ABC & CBS. In the future, they could carry Fox or CW.
There is a big difference between being affiliated with, and being owned & operated by.
Belo is a Texas based broadcast company, and it's stations have affiliations with every network.
OK fine. MSM is in the eye of the beholder. To me, King 5 is the epitome of MSM. YMMV. It doesn't change the debate much either way.
