I think its interesting-- I agree that you can't become a southerner. The true southerners I have met have always been/will always be southerners and it is an important part of their character.

On the other hand, you can become a New Yorker. People who have lived in the city just a couple of years consider themselves New Yorkers and others will often accept them as such.

People in Texas probably have more in common with people in Nebraska than Georgia.

Does Indiana have anything in common with Rhode Island?

In other words, New York is more open-minded and accepting of people who are different.

It depends what part of Texas and whether you're in an urban or rural area.

On one level, but I think even that's more for show and to justify their "elitist" attitude. New Yorkers are some of the rudest people there are.

I'm southern without a thick accent. I called a young waitress ma'am in Chicago recently, and she laughed and asked where I was from.

Because Southerners are generally very polite, even to strangers. Midwesterners? Some are polite, some aren't...especially in large cities. The same could be said of Westerners to some extent. Northeasterners are the least polite.
