Is California America's version of Greece? Out of control spending and essentially bankrupt, California depends on the Feds (and other states taxes) to keep it afloat. What liberal feel good programs should we have them curtail to get them in line with the rest of the states?

I don't think Texas is in any better shape, financially.

Considering they've had to subsidize welfare states...such as my own...for so many years I'm just glad they haven't started mailing out IOU's to the various state governments. Most of "the rest of the states" can thank higher oil prices not "budget cuts".

California accounts for nearly 14% of our GDP. They must be doing something right.

I think they should lose the right to referendum and initiatives. California has shown to be extremely irresponsible when it comes to using the direct democracy it has. In fact California needs to completely throw out its constitution and create a new one at this point.

Really? How exactly does California depend on the Fed and other states to keep afloat? As far as I know CA has usually paid far more to the Federal gov. than it has received back. California is also one of the largest economies in the WORLD, how does that make them the new Greece?

The price of freedom and democracy is that sometimes bad decisions will be made. You take the good with the bad.

California's problem is their system of ballot initiatives.

They'll put a ballot initiative up that says they should increase education spending, but then they'll put one on that says you can't raise taxes to pay for it.

Its insane.

I didn't say Californians should lose there ability to elect officials. I am saying that special interest groups run California and the state can be pretty fubar when it comes to what becomes law and the legal battles that are caused in the courts over it. Switzerland tends to do a pretty good job at this but California doesn't.

I agree. It needs to be reined in somehow. It has become a magnet for every special interest group in creation. Another downside is that it gives our politicians a cheap way out from having to take tough stands on spending.

In spite of the initiative proccess CA manages to balance it's budget. People take shots at CA because its fun and makes them feel good about wherever they live I guess.
