The only thing Obama is going to do is declare victory.

Most likely yes. Therefore you should probably leave the US as soon as possible.

I doubt it. Lots of folks thought Clinton would do it, using Y2K as an excuse. An equal number thought Bush would do it and claim the "war on terror" as the reason.

I have little doubt any politician would try it if they believed they could get away with it but so far none have been that foolish.

It's unlikely Obama will pioneer the process.

I've seen there has been widespread histeria over the internet about this executive order and how Obama is going to declare peace time martial law with it. I've skimmed through it several times and for the life of me I cannot find what provisions in this executive order could conceivably give the president thatkind of power. I've looked through several websites and all I can find are claims it gives the president that power, but nobody has actually explained how. Anybody here know?

This panicky nonsense has been drifting around C-D since 2009 at least. Check out the old topics at the bottom of this page for examples.

Ask the question: Why is it to Obama's advantage to declare martial law for an election? An election is an election. If on the extreme possibility that a riot or something should break out in a polling place, does it not make sense such an event would be handled by the local Sheriff? After all, it is the Counties who are responsible for all election activities.

Has there ever been martial law declared for an election? No. Not even in the middle of the civil war. During that election, some polling places were guarded the U.S. Marshall's service who comandeered some Washington guard troops, but it was only done on the request of the local officials.

Has there ever been an attack on a polling place? I don't know. But such an attack would not be cause for nation-wide martial law.
