Are people in leadership positions deserving of respect regardless of their character and actions?

A house-mate started a debate that we should in fact respect the person in the leadership position for the heck of it regardless of his/her actual accomplishments, values, and ethics. For example we should respect various Presidents, Senators, Governors, Mayors, and CEOs solely because they are in that position regardless of their actual effectiveness or ethos. I did not touch this debate topic with a ten foot pole. I wondered what the people think on this political topic.

This topic is rather vague and very flexible.

Make what you want out of it. Take it in any direction that fits for this forum and its topics.

Respect the person not the position.
Most politicians are creeps and criminals not worthy of any respect.

Easy to judge a politician unless you step into their shoes and share the responsibilities they have while others sit on the sidelines and act like arm-chair what-have-you.

Could I suggest a change in the title of the thread to

"Are people in leadership positions deserving of respect regardless of their character and actions?"

The current title is unclear and confusing.

The Catholic belief is that God's (permissive?) will is always behind any election or appointment or succession, so we ought to respect all authority. Part of respect, however, is criticism and even civil disobedience.
