Might sound like an odd question, but as a non-American I sometimes get that feeling. There seems to be contempt or outright hate for anyone that is considered gentle in one way or another. There are lots of words such as ***** to make fun of anyone considered gentle, be it vegetarians, emos (I am not a fan of those, either, but I don't make fun of or tease them, I just ignore them), environmentalists, people who reject guns and violence, soccer players and fans, even intellectuals (who tend to be rather gentle as well, avoiding physical confrontation), bikers and pedestrians, reasonable/moderate/soft-spoken people (sometimes it seems to me that the more radical people's views are, the better in the minds of many Americans), etc.
And if my impression is correct, why is it that way?

So, you think because people eat vegetables they are gentle? And have you ever heard of ecoterrorists? And people who bike and walk are gentle because mode of transportation determines temperment? And "self identified intellectuals" don't put bombs in buildings, throw pies at people they are trying to deny free speech to or scream curse words? All gentle?
Are the effects of the history and our legislation biased too?
No, but their interpretation is. For example you may view great society programs as examples of "gentleness". I may view it as enslavement of generations of people.
Let's start with the fact that per capita, Americans do not give much money to charities, though we claim to.
Look at our treatment of the infirm, the elderly, children and disabled.
Look at legislation regarding the above groups.
We are so quick to spend billions on warfare but bristle at the thought of providing healthcare for everyone in our country. We think people who need help from the system are lazy good for nothings.
