It's not exactly that - but they have become more of a political organization. To me, if they were for the advancement of colored people, that advancement would be their end goal regardless of the political means for such advancement. That doesn't seem to be the case right now.
There are black conservatives that are successful - why not court them as to how and why they are where they are?
Indeed, there are black conservatives, both culturally through the influence of Black churches and many are economically successful. Yet they refuse to vote Republican.
But part of advancing African Americans in this country was working to overturn Jim Crow laws in the South and segregation. You had to get political in order to achieve that. Also, once rights are gained doesn't mean that they'll always be respected by everyone else. There are still a lot of people in this country who are either racist, or hold naive stereotypes about African Americans. You need a watchdog group to make sure that their rights are maintained and that negative stereotypes are busted. I'm white, but I have absolutely no problem with the NAACP.
And it doesn't help when people like Rush Limbaugh and others denounce groups like the NAACP. 90% of blacks vote Democrat for a reason, and honestly, I don't blame them one bit. The GOP is no longer the Party of Lincoln.
Thats " one mans terrorist is another mans patriot"
What ever. I have heard it both ways.
