There is a reason Michigan’s English Language Proficiency Standards call for students to “engage in challenging and purposeful learning that blends their experiences with content knowledge and real-world applications.” Students learn better this way.
Very teachable moment indeed like.
1) Follow the rules when organizing a school event.
Quote:
She and her students began the formal process of organizing a school event. Students wrote persuasive letters to the principal and superintendent. Brooke and a co-worker filed the necessary paperwork. The principal immediately signed off on the fundraiser.
2) When originally denied, request an opportunity to present the idea in person and hey.....even bring along the students as well.
Quote:
Superintendent Cassell was less enthusiastic. She refused to approve the proposal, despite having supported many other “dress down” fundraisers. Brooke’s students took the disappointment in stride, but asked to present their idea to Cassell in person.
And that’s when things got weird.
Brooke asked that a few of her students be allowed to attend her meeting with Cassell. Outraged by the request, Cassell suspended Brooke for two days. The explanation given—she was being paid to teach, not to be an activist.
Suspended for asking a question?
Now here is where I disagree with the teacher although I understand what she was doing.
Quote:
Those two days morphed into a two-week, unpaid suspension when Brooke briefly stopped by the afterschool literacy fair (she had previously organized) to drop off prizes (paid for with her own money) and to pick up materials for several students whose parents were unable to attend. Supporting her students was insubordination.
When you are suspended don't go back to school regardless of how good your intentions are. To not think someone would get pissed about this is dumb.
Quote:
The final offense? Brooke asked Cassell to clarify her original transgression so she could learn from her mistake. Cassell referred her to the minutes of their first meeting. Still confused, Brooke again requested an explanation. Cassell fired her.
Basically the Superintendent did not like being questioned about her ruling and being asked about it again must have pissed her off.
The moral of the story is 1) don't teach kids about real world events and if you REALLY have to make sure they are not linked to anything controversial 2) do not question authority ever.....especially in an at will state. Keep your head down, go through the motions and always say yes sir/ma'am 3) never ever ask for an explanation for anything even if you want to use it for future reference and personal growth.
Wear a hoodie, pay $1 and the proceeds go to the parents I think. Something like that but it was supposed to be for the school and the Principal signed off originally.
This is more a superintendant vendetta. I imagine the superintendant has considered this teacher a thorn in her side for years with her activism and creative teaching and was looking for an excuse to fire her. 90% of the news stories that involve a teacher being fired for what people perceive a s a stupid reason are usually a personal grudge since there are loads of teachers who kiss administration's butt and constantly get away with way worse.

I wonder if the parents will allow them to print Trayvon's now copyrighted name on these hoodies for a certain amount of royalties.
This is not good. But the website that George Zimmerman has put up to raise money is beyond disgusting.
Do you really want to get into 'disgusting" things involving this incident and subsequent occurances involving others like media and 'celebs'.... really?
First, you are relying on a blog as a source for your information that is clearly bias (look at the name of it). That's like Republican reviewing Obama's job as president.
You don't know what interaction she had with the principal. There could have been a heated argument or words exchanged. It's impossible to know, we're just hearing one side.
It's unethical for a teacher to get that involved in a matter that is obviously politically-charged. If she wanted to help, she should have advocated for these kids to do this during non-school hours.
Allowing these students to do this, would also open the door for students to do the same for Zimmerman. Do you honestly believe she would be as supportive? Would that be fair if she wasn't as supportive?

Yes. I am sure that is what they will do. Have they already started slinging Trayvon covered products yet?
