Do you find there is a lot less gender consciousness among certain sub-cultures vs the 'mainstream'?
I'm talking about say...self-identified 'academics', intellectuals, arty types...of course the *****/trans/gay realm is different altogether, but what of the so-called 'alternative' types, those who are more beatnik, have purple hair, dress in more individual styles. Also 'nerdy' people tend to be a bit like this. True individuals. It seems these people care more about the individual than what society deems 'acceptable' behaviour, especially when it comes to gender. I.e., there is less of an expectation of 'traditional behaviour', or dividing things into 'male' or 'female' categories.
I find this to be the case. The people I meet in my grad school classes (writing) and professors seem to be much more open (understanding) of not wanting to get married or have kids, being gay/bisexual, choosing not to be a stay-at-home mom and working instead, open to turning gender roles on their head etc. then say my co-workers (more mainstream). On top of it, I feel they are much more open to discussing these topics and always up for a debate or discussion.
I must be getting old, because I am not sure exactly what we mean here. Are we talking about people who do not outwardly appear to identify with a typical gender role in their behavior, dress, actions, decisions, etc?

Just those who tend not to conform as much to mainstream gender roles, behaviours, socio-political views.
Nothing to do with liberal/conservative either. You can have folk you have liberal views who are quite conventional, depending on the political climate.

Or is it largely the same?

Maybe it's me but I don't understand anything I'm reading this morning.

A lot of them are posers, they are just as rigid as the Santorum/shariah types in their own ways. Its the flip side of the same coin really

Where is this Main Stream and how do I know if I'm in or out of it?
