There is this fascinating article, Eleven Wretched Women in the current issue (May 2012) of Running Times magazine by the excellent writer Roger Robinson. No link available yet, but hardcopy should be available at any self-respecting book store.

It's about the 1928 Olympics. At the time there was a push to allow more participation by females, but the elites and media thought they knew what was best for the helpless hordes. Nonetheless, for the first time, in 1928 in Amsterdam, there was an 800 meter race for the ladies.

Media accounts of the race depicted a horrifying spectacle:

According to writer Kirsten Olsen in her book Chronology of Women's History, the NYT also printed the 'eleven wretched women' meme.
Other MSM sources, doubtless citing the junk science of the day, said that females racing 800 meters (approx 1/2 mile) would be 'desexed' and their 'reproductive capacity impaired.' Only one problem. It was all pure fiction and pure garbage. There had only been 9 competitors, not 11. One leaned forward at the finish and fell, but was helped up without drama. The others finished without incident, 3 of them under the then-world record. According to Robinson, footage of the race can be seen in the movie Spirit of the Marathon, and the media accounts are clearly way off.

The IOC nevertheless used the accounts to bar women from the 800m until 1960, when the event was finally reinstated. So there really was a "war on women," and it was the MSM and East Coast elites leading the charge. Then as now, making $*#t up, total weasels and con artists. Then as now imagining themselves to be superior beings, these sick twisted freaks were not happy unless they could control the lives of others.

Yes, and the same east coast elites were the ones pushing Katherine Switzer off the Boston Marathon course in the late 1960's.

answer is no, no kids--they did not marry until she was about 40.

BTW the above-referenced film Spirit of the Marathon can be viewed free on hulu:

The footage of the 1928 Women's 800m race can be seen at the 51:34 mark and just after that there is a segment about Kathrine Switzer and her entry into the Boston marathon.
