The Democrats

The Democrats’ Growing Medicare Dilemma
By Yuval Levin

August 15, 2012 11:48 AM

In the last few days, the Romney campaign has moved to dramatically change the terrain of Medicare politics, and it looks like the Democrats are beginning to realize how vulnerable they might be. Because of Obamacare, it is the Democrats who now plan to cut current seniors’ benefits (especially those in Medicare Advantage) and access to care (thanks to the IPAB) while still failing to avert the program’s (and the nation’s) fiscal collapse, and because Romney would repeal Obamacare and pursue a version of the Ryan-Wyden premium-support reform it is the Republicans who would protect current seniors’ benefits and make them available to future seniors while saving the program from collapse through market reforms. Through the candidates’ statements this week and through this
new ad, Romney and Ryan have made clear they’re going to inform voters about this and force the Democrats to defend themselves on Medicare.

That won’t be easy for the Left, since the Romney campaign’s charges are true, and it is beginning to become apparent that the Democrats are totally unprepared for the coming fight. Click link for more

If they don't, they should.

Of the many, many issues that the Dems could rightly trounce the Rupblicans on several will no doubt be negated by this, y'know, awful, cataclysmic program.

I've been extremely dubious of tampering w/ Medicare. But, being open-minded and realizing it's on thin ice, this article has sure impressed me, as to how stubborn many of us may have been regarding this issue.

The Dilemma here is on the Republicans, which path to destruction of Medicare will they choose? They never even wanted to allow grandma and grandpa to live with decency anyway... so they secretively (as they are secretive) wanted to destroy Medicare always.

Having been leary of tampering w/ Medicare/SS, what you mention here...is one key reason I've been dubious. But, open to more facts, etc.

Democrats have always been kinda 'slow' on issues related to economics; that's nothing new.

By the time they wake up and realize how much trouble they're in because of it and their refusal to address it, they'll be toast.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act transfers money($132 billion) from Medicare Advantage(which is a wasteful program) over the next ten years towards it to expand coverage for people without it. Regular medicaid will be unaffected and the donut hole in it will be closed. In otherwords, medicare(advantage) is being "cut", but not in the sense that some Republicans would like you to believe that all medicare is being cut.

Ryan/Romney's plan on the otherhand, if enacted, would over the next turn years turn medicare into a voucher program where the cost is tied to the lowest bidder which means you could get a barebones package and end up having to pay out of pocket expenses for healthcare(if the barebones doesn't already cover the full cost). Keep in mind that the current Ryan/Romney plan is barebones as they don't want to go into detail for some reason. There are still a lot of other specifics I would like answered and hopefully this election now being a contest between two completely different ideologies will force the Romney camp to start giving out specifics.
