Let's see: she was warned by the judge that the consequence for continuing to miss school would be jail. She ignored the judge.
She is allegedly taking all kinds of advanced placement classes, etc., but, many of these are contingent on actually showing up for class. How is it that she has been able to stay in these classes with such poor attendance?
Finally, most states have automatic fails triggered by excessive absences. Is she getting special treatment from her school, district, whatever?
Yes, is it is commendable that she is supporting her sibling, but, as someone else noted, someone should be hunting down those parents and prosecuting them for child abandonment.

And what good would that do the kids who need to be fed and have a roof over their heads NOW? Or should they be turned over to "Child Protective Services" [sic]? Really if the system is so messed up that a 17 year old who is busting her butt to keep her family together and holding her own at school - and refuses the donations offered to her yet (!) gets thrown into JAIL then I wouldn't trust anyone in that same system to take care of these kids.
A smart kid can easily be a honor student in today's dumbed down curriculum without even attending class. In this case the law is an ass and so is the judge.
That's the problem with public schools, they're so dumbed down that a half-way smart kid can miss more days than not and still be an honor student.
A whole lot of time is wasted in the schools as far as education.
So you take ONE incident, and use it to indict all public schools?
