I belive this is a major issue, one that could resolve alot of our problems. As our growing deficit and debt story shows, a nation of consumers does not balance the books.
In times when we see billions of dollars a month in trade deficit between the USA and China, China places a ~17% tax on items they import from the USA. We, on the other hand, charge a commodity based tax from 1.6% to 3% on goods coming stateside from China.
This in-difference is what costs us our manufacturing jobs, and also puts our gov't at a loss when they could be collecting more tax on imported goods.
This seems to be a no fly zone with congress and it's my opinion the kickbacks from our perveyors of Chinese goods must be pretty good. Good enough that as we kick the can further and further with more bailouts, debt, and social programs nothing is done to fix the root of the problem.
Like closing your door behind you, it should be a no-brainer to impose higher taxes on foreign goods to balance trade.
I can certainly do without most of the Chinese crap I buy that ends up in the garbage anyway.
The people that argue they can't afford anything else, well you are having your arms chopped off and fed to you to keep from starving.
What say everyone?

Old topic. Decade old at least. Americans have been made to look foolish on the global scale. Sold off by politicians and corporations. They laugh at how hard we have to work, and how foolish we look with our stupid Chinese gadgets and such. Was it worth it?

Don't buy China if ya don't like. Good luck convincing the other 350 million American of that. Their too broke at this point to buy much else, and they happen to have a taste for consuming their children's future.

Because we let them largely because companies bribe US politicians to unilaterally surrender. That's why they have a 17% tariff on everything we make (that's average but on automobiles it goes as high as 50%) where as we don't tariff anything from them. It's corruption, plain and simple.

Clinton signs China trade bill, - October 10, 2000

President Clinton closed years of political and economic debate Tuesday, and sealed a major achievement of his administration by signing a bill extending permanent, normal trade status to China.

"Today we take a major step toward China's entry into the World Trade Organization and a major step toward answering some of the central challenges of this new century," Clinton said in a bipartisan White House ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

"Trade with China will not only extend our nation's unprecedented economic growth, it offers us a chance to help shape the future of the world's most prosperous nation and to reaffirm our own global leadership for peace and prosperity."

The measure is considered the most important U.S. trade legislation since passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1993. But it faced a long campaign of opposition from labor, human rights and conservative groups who wanted to retain the annual review of trade relations with China.

The nail in the coffin of the most prosperous nation to ever walk the earth.

Because we like our stuff cheap. And it no longer matters if something is built to last or not.

One of the problems is if and when we place tariffs on products coming into this country we can be fined by the WTO. I admit I haven't read up on it recently, so I don't know the specifics, but I do believe it's the WTO that makes those determinations, based on agreements our leaders have signed with other countries.

China learned from watching your trade dealings with other members of NAFTA. They're not in the same position as other members of trade agreements with you. They have buying clout with their population numbers and have more leverage.

Yep. The WTO can make decisions and levy fines EXCEPT the U.S. has been known to ignore those decisions and NOT pay the fines but simply launch an appeal process after perhaps two preceeding decisions have already been decided against the U.S. on the same issue.

China won't submit to the bullying others have had no choice but to endure.

Bullying? It's not bullying to demand fair trade, something the U.S. consumer/worker usually comes out on the losing end of. Not only is China using very cheap labor, but they are manipulating their currency and placing tariffs on U.S. goods, but get away with selling their extremely low quality product here without the same high tariffs.

It'll start to change if the socialist gets voted out of the presidency next fall.
