How about learning about our justice system before you whine about things. Did you study it in high school? Go to college? The amount will get knocked down in appeal.
Instead of whining about the $3M, perhaps you could all start whining about people's rush to comment on things about which they know nothing.
Yet another thread where you're commenting on healthcare and yet know not much about it. Go do some research on healthcare costs. Litigation is a rather small piece of the puzzle.
I used to work in the medical malpractice insurance field and Georgia has been one of the troubled states. While the award will be appealed they are still racking up legal fees.
The amount that defensive medicine and malpractice rates add to medical costs varies WILDLY by state.
The same doctor in one state might pay 10x more for coverage in another state. You don't see wild swings like this in coverages like auto insurance. It's driven by the state's laws, peoples likelihood to sue and the willingness of juries to hand over large sums.
It's a sad state of affairs when a states medical malpractice situation gets so bad that people have to travel to other states to see an OBGYN for their pregnancy since most have left their state.
But defensive medicine is NOT a small piece of the puzzle.
Btw, no matter how much it gets 'knocked down,' I can guarantee you hundreds of thousands were already spent on the defense.
People only look at the reward amounts. Never the cost of litigation/defense.
YOU, sir, are the one who needs education.
Depends on a number of variables but a rough rule of thumb IMO would be about 35cents on the dollar going to legal costs. My info is probably a bit dated but it's a reasonable ballpark figure for countrywide costs.
It is cases like this which keep me from voting for any candidate at the state or federal level who is in bed with the trial attorneys' lobby. So, out of that $3 million award how much did the trial attorneys take home?

Really? Commiting adultery is the last act in life for which you'd want to be remembered?
