Apart from the damaged lives resulting from abuses by fewer than 4 percent of priests during the most licentious period in western history, the over-reaction by the Church hierarchy has been devastating. Good priests are now permanently removed from ministry on the flimsiest allegations, their reputations ruined for life. One priest in CA was recently removed based on repressed memory "evidence" from some 30 years ago, despite the priest having passed two polygraph tests. It's become a witch hunt.

Over-reaction? Sorry but given that the Pope's previous position was that of the Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, it is highly likely that he was complicit in the cover-up of the sexual abuse at the hands of some of the clergy. If there is one thing that the Church should never be accused of now it's over-reaction after the fact. Unfortunately the Church hierarchy made its bed; now it has to lie in it, along with Catholics everywhere.

Democrats don't follow the church. They make the church follow Democrats.

Pelosi talked about "The Word". That woman knows nothing about "The Word". Or anything else. God fearing Nancy would never give up her stance on abortion to follow the Lord.

Democrats first try to make the church change so that it suits them. That is blasphemy.

Then outside of the church they call Christians bigots. Democrats have no God other than themselves and government.

Agenda much? This is a thread in a right wing rag.
You expect someone to take this seriously?

How about the castration of those who the church thought might be gay?

It's about time that people wised up to religion and the evils thereof.

The subtext behind liberal modernity - sometimes conscious, sometimes unconscious - has always been that of rebellion against the Catholic Church. That rebellion is entering its full bloom. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

On a related note, the epic film "For Greater Glory" opened in the United States yesterday. Don't miss it.

So it's "rebellion" to demand accountability and transparency from an organization that institutionalized the molestation of little boys for generations? Do you blame people for being ANGRY? That and the other corruption issues coming out....abuse of power is an ugly thing, and abuse of power by the very people charged with protecting the powerless is unforgivable.

Justice is still justice, and two wrongs don't make a right. Didn't your mother ever teach you that? A policy of removal based on a single unproven allegation is hideously unjust, and is an open invitation for anti-Catholics and unstable personalities to attack the Church.

And this, when there is a critical shortage of priests! How many young men will want to enter the priesthood in such a climate?

Who cares if there's a shortage of priests?
Perhaps the church should just close its doors.
The world would be a better place.

I love how you make excuses for institutionalized rape of young kids, though.
It's the hallmark of your religion.

Baloney. The church has lost the trust of it's people, and with good reason. THAT's the problem.

If you get rid of God then Government can decide what is ethical and moral.

The Church is now reaping what it has sown. Men are fallible. The Church is run by men. The Church gave others the ammunition that they are now using to lambast the Church. It's unfortunate. But there it is.

This is why there is a shortage of priests? You don't think that has more to do with the celibacy requirement?
