I think the more important part about that is it's a small area so there is less points of failure to begin with and doesn't have to be reusable which opens the doors to more other materials that are easier to design.
Agreed - but if you're going to have a reusable glider, FFS put it on top of the stack.

It is shame that this happened, but the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum (formerly a WWII air carrier) on the Hudson river in Manhattan is an excellent place to house the Enterprise space shuttle. (See http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/ .)
