Here's the story (http://www.wvec.com/news/topstories/stories/wvec_local_092407_discrim_lawsuit_kokomaos.1057a37 95.html - broken link)
Bottom line: A privately owned club has a very strict dress code - one that involved lengths of skirts, cleavage, underwear showing (boys and girls) and.. hair styles.
Of the hairstyles, they ban: braids, twists, cornrows, or dreadlocks - which are primarily seen on African Americans. Now they're being sued on premise that they are being racist with the dress code.
Do you think that this is a case of mistaken or intentional racism?
Well is it a private club (like the loyal Order of waterbuffalo) or a nightclub? either way it seems pretty obvious they're trying to keep black folks out. One way is their business and one way is illegal. In either event we should remember their viewpoints and treat the club accordingly, i.e. as a place which has legislated its anti-black attitudes.
Well, it seems pretty obvious that they are trying to keep out a certain TYPE of black person/culture if not black people altogether.
Though dredlocks and cornrows on white people is pretty hideous and should be banned no matter what, lol
I've only seen one or two guys who were able to PROPERLY maintain dreads.. The lumpy dreads most guys have... are really gross.
This place has a strict dress code. And the hairstyles mentioned are primarily "black styles." However, it is a private establishment... and if they don't want braids in there... then they can say no braids.
There are plenty of nice hairstyles that I've seen on black people that look great without involving dreads or braids. Though, I personally don't understand the ban on twists and cornrows.
For the record, personally, I think if you don't like the rules of an establishment, then don't go there..
It's a private club, they have the right to set proper dress codes. Many popular restaurants for example require men to wear jackets. And many clubs require men to wear shirts that have collars.
Remember that cornrow hair style Bo Derick wore in the movie "10?" She wouldn't get in.
It's private so they really can do what they want with the dress code. I would be able to make a better assessment of their motives if I knew whether or not they allowed black people to come in with different hairstyles and if they allowed white people to come in with mohawks etc.
