Do you think the United States (lower 48) is over populated/too crowded? Why or why not? Just looking for general opinions and observations, not trying to start an immigration debate.

In comparison to the rest of the planet, we are fine. There are many countries and regions that are far more densely populated, and many that are less. We seem to fall in the middle for now, which is okay.

Immigration will obviously add to our population, but we are nowhere near the breaking point of what we can accomodate, the only problem lies in how our govt. deals with population growth.

This reminds me about the blind men describing an elephant, their descriptions varying based upon where they were getting their "input." If you are in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, the metro LA area or Washington DC it feels crowded. If you are in Wyoming, Montana, Iowa or Nebraska it feels sparse. Overall, we have a population distribution problem due to inefficient generation, distribution and storage of natural resources.

But overall, we don't suffer from excess population.

the US as a whole is sparsly populated compared to other nations. I believe 75-80% of Americans live in urban areas.

Some parts are and some parts are not. We do have an oversupply of unskilled labor and an oversupply of laborers. Skilled tradesmen are getting harder to find but there are plenty of potential bureaucrats available.

Hence the stagnation of wages for folks in that category.

See? It's not a big old right-wing conspiracy after all, is it?

Just plain old supply and demand. Plus ca change, plus la meme chose, and all that jazz...

I agree. I think it's overpopulated where there are too many people, but where there are fewer people, not so much.

Hmmm. That was fun.

Okay, what's next?

Thanks for the input. I think that compared to Canada/Alaska and Russia, the lower 48 would seem pretty crowded, based on these regions as a whole and our population is growing at a fairly fast clip (were supposed to go from 300 million to 400 million by 2050 or something like that). Also, quite a few people from more crowded places such as California and the North East are moving to less populated places in the west like Montana, Wyo., and Utah and these areas are seeing some pretty good population increases. I think were just fine right now, but what do you think about the future?

The question is if we are overpopulated period, not if we are in relation to other places.
Yes definatly, we are overpopulated and it is the root of most of the other problems we face. Water shortages, electric shortages, overcrowded schools, crime, traffic, housing prices, pollution, rising medical costs, low wages, are all results of increased population. There is a direct correlation to population and standard of living. Sure there are places where the problem is worse, is that the direction we want to go? Constantly adding more and more people as our standard of living contiues to deteriorate? Overpopulation benifits Goverment and big buisness at the expense of people.
