We don't have a better friend than Canada. Whenever we need something, the Canadien's are first in line to offer help.
In this case, we need a new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, ON but the Michigan legislature wouldn't put up the money for it. So...Ontario will. They'll pay almost the full cost of building a new bridge downstream from the horridly crowded Ambassador Bridge and collect the toll money to recoup their costs. They bear all the risk if the tolls are insufficient and Michigan gets only the benefits of the bridge.
Thank you Canada...again. You were there when we needed you during the Iranian hostage crisis, during the Gulf War and in Afghanistan. You're there for us now.
Note of caution, though. The Ambassador Bridge is privately owned and some of our federal tax dollars will be used to build the new one under the existing highway construction funding mechanism. I'm betting dollars to your donuts that the GOP House will try to kill this project. The excuse will be because we can't afford to spend $2 million right now, but the real reason will be to protect the bridge owners profits.

Two million?
The lieutenant governor repeated earlier pledges that the $550 million Canadian contribution will count as state road spending, allowing Michigan to secure about $2 billion in federal money over the life of the bridge project through a formula that matches each $1 Michigan spends with $4 in federal money.

Oops. You're right. And, the $550 million Canada will pony up is what would be Michigan's share of the cost, in addition to what Canada itself is putting up.
In any case, it's a sterling example of international co-operation which could only be achieved with our friends the Canadian's. We are blessed to have such a great neighbor to our north.
Do you think tourism and commerce may be more important to Windsor than Detroit?
An efficient border crossing at Detroit is in all our interests. A huge amount of cross-border truck traffic is carried on that bridge and the current inspection facilities on the Detroit end are so inadequate that I've seen the trucks literally backed up across the bridge into Canada.

Canada and Windsor get a HELL of a lot of money from Detroit, and workers who come over every day.
This isn't about lending the US or Michigan a helping hand, its economically sound for them to pay for the bridge, more money for them.
Michigan is broke, unless the federal government, which is broke, fits the bill then there was no way to pay for it.
The Ambassador bridge is crowded with trucks, everyday. Most people use the tunnel in regular cars and trucks.
Don't forget that they were there saying how both Iraq and Vietnam were bad ideas.
Maybe so, but they were there, and in Afghanistan where 158 Canadian's have been killed. And there are over 100 Canadian's on the Vietnam Memorial in DC.

I am curious do you think giving Canada "money" is better than the owners of the Ambassador bridge? You seem to imply this. Certainly I can see 2 bridges being better than one.
Wonder what plans are set for that area, interesting. Somehow, I don't think the "funders" are doing this as a "charitable" thing. Clearly there is "potential" benefit to be had. Wouldn't be surprised to see more of this.
