Er...No. Third world nations are characterized by huge economic inequality. An elite hold all the wealth, and the rest have little or nothing. Normally the elite is the people with the political/military power.

I mean duh? Is there a single third world country where the top layer isn't filthy rich? Somalia maybe.

Certainly we are not approaching 3rd world status. Far too many safety nets in place. While we have growing wealth and income inequality, the same problem has existed in Mexico for decades. Mexico is far from a third world country.
