If they are just going to shovel money at teachers with no accountability then this may simply be an election-year payoff.
you cant say "pay for performance" near the union guys

the unions all FEAR, " pay for performance"

liberals fear "pay for performance"

it like "omg, some one might get paid more because they are a better performer...that so...unequal"

I agree 100% about the need to deal with bad teachers. However, parents have more to do with the learning process than do teachers - and that's what no school system can change.
That's why I would propose a strict documentation system to prove the teachers have tried to engage the home front. If the teacher has done their job but the kid refuses and they've contacted parents, offered extra help, etc. then the teacher is not responsible for the failure.

Their fault, their destiny. How dumb they are!
The Dems in NJ are providing financial aid to immigrant's children because of their problems getting financial aid.

N.J. lawmakers want immigrants' children to receive tuition aid | NJ.com

and of American citizens will foot that bill too, while their kids flip burgers.

It is funny reading the conservative members here boo this proposal. You see, it's ok to reward corporate CEOs with hundreds of millions in bonuses under the premise that we can encourage better performance with incentives, but use the same rationale for teachers -- nah.

Yes! But if little Johnny on a baseball team who couldn't catch a ball to save his life gets a trophy just for playing, they say the system is socialist or communist and "coddling children". But if Hewlett-Packard CEO Leo Apotheker gets fired for tanking the company and walks away with $13 million, that's OK in their books because he was a job creator and it'll trickle down. Yup it sure will.

It all comes down to, whatever Obama proposes, they are against it. If he proposed world peace, they would say that's bad for the economy.

The NJ teacher's union has some of the most lucrative benefits in the country. Teach 25 years and get free health benefits for you and your spouse for the rest of your life. And they bitched when they raised the copay from $5.

From what I've been reading, in many places there are far more administrators than are needed. The administrators make 3 times what the teachers do and never see a classroom. Cut some of the administrators and hire more teachers.

The unions are losing members so we have to pay teachers more so their percentage that goes to the unions makes up for the difference. Obama shouldn't have any say in what States pay their teachers. He thinks people are too stupid to realize he is trying to raise State taxes as well as Federal taxes.

You're right. There is much more regionalization that can be done with school boards and admins.

A lot of conservatives do not believe in these large severance packages despite lack of results. I'm going to say 99% of the population thinks its asinine when they receive these deals, so don't worry.

This is where I totally disagree. It's the conservative mentality of less regulations that is killing this country.
