I think there are plenty of people - Democrats and Republicans alike - who are rational, thoughtful individuals, capable of civil discussion of their political differences because they realize that they have much in common - a love of country, a desire to have their children enjoy a better life than their own, and so on. I realize that this is not especially evident on the P&OC forum, but that's the nature of online political forums - they tend to bring out the worst in people, or at least put people in a very poor light.

However (you knew that was coming, right?), I also think that there is a wide range of specific beliefs residing under the umbrella of each party - a center, left, and right for each. And the number of Democrats who are way over on the left of left are seriously outnumbered by the number of Republicans who are way over on the right of right. And once your views are that extreme in either direction, rational discussion devolves into shrill shouting, and reason is overtaken by delusion.

Obama doesn’t stop any wars starts dropping bombs from drones and he wins Nobel peace prize.

GWB starts Gitmo he is a war criminal
Obama promises to get rid of them, doesn’t... he is NOT a war criminal.... he is a wonderful guy. If you don’t agree with that you are a racist.

Some crazy shoots a congresswoman. It was CONSERVATIVE! their policy leads to murderous rage! oops, dudes writings were liberal ranting... turns out politics had nothing to do with it...

Some guy attacks a movie theater last night. Liberals blame teaparty...oops dude wasn’t really a teaparty guy....

Conservatives show up by the hundreds of thousands in DC to protest government spending and over reach. Libs say they are dangerous and really it was just about 35 knuckleheads. They leave peacefully and clean up behind themselves.

Liberals turn up by the hundreds in NYC and around the country, they break laws and stink the place up. people get raped and police cars get pooped on.... Libs say they are peaceful and wonderful and represent the very best of American Patriotism.

Conservatives pass legislation that allows state police to check legal status when there is probable cause. Liberals riot. People go to the hospital. Buildings get damaged. Liberal media calls it a “mostly peaceful protest”.

Conservatives debate issues surrounding public unions and seek to correct imbalance in state funding of teacher benefits. Liberals run away and don’t debate. Conservatives say “come back let’s talk”. Liberals refuse seek injunctions. Finally the liberals loose the argument. They break the state capital causing millions in damage. Threaten businesses that agree with the conservatives. Peoples livelihoods are at risk… Liberals sue. Loose again. have recalls because conservatives are evil. Liberals loose again. Liberals have more recalls. Liberals loose again.

Republicans nominate a woman as Vice President. Liberals go on vicious attack. Dis her dress. Talk evil about her kids. VP has a Down Syndrome child. Liberals accuse the family of hiding the “fact”t that the child is actually the VPs daughters child… it’s a lie but its fun to attack conservatives…. Speaking of the daughter… Liberals have nice words for the child of a politician…they call her (word for woman who sleeps with lots of guys...starts with S ends with LUT). Then a liberal feminist goes on national television and suggest the WOMAN VP candidate should drop out of not only politics but THE WORKFORCE and go home and raise her kids…

Yea liberals are really calm cool and collected when it comes to political debate/disagreement. They just almost NEVER get crazy eyed. It is just them nasty conservatives that are mean and awful.

You know I could go on and on… we could talk about G20 summits and Republican convention activity.
I am reminded of something Uncle Ronnie said…” it isn’t that he doesn’t know anything. It’s just that he knows so much that just isn’t so.”
I have to concede that you have some pretty good points here. These are good examples of double standards.

what more need be said? Hardliners abound. Both party's have them.
Disagree with the left you are a wing nut or a racist.
Disagree with the right and you are a liberal, anti america.
I love the excuses that are made. Step back and laugh because both sides use the same excuse. Change a few buzz words.
#1 excuse? Well X did it, so its ok that Y did it too.

We don't know the OP so for all we know they work for the DNC.

Most politically connected people have come to a conclusion on whether they want to be controlled by a giant bloating government that regulates everything or to have a smaller government were the population has more say in life.
If you have not come down on one side or the other on that issue and keep voting for Lord knows what than you would be a rudderless ship.

If you love big government, the expense of massive government employment and hand outs with no way to pay for it, then you lean Democrat/progressive/liberal.
If you want smaller government, less restrictions, less lawsuits with care for mostly only the elderly or disabled you probably lean Republican/conservative.

Demorcrates usually resort to name calling and yelling, republicans always bring up God and tell you you're a sinner. Can't win with either one.

And the person you want to drink a beer with is probably not the person you want leading the country.

Republican speak out of both sides of their mouth. You claim you want smaller government yet you want government to restrict women's rights and take them backwards.
