it's impossible to compare and contrast laws in this way.
If we did, nothing could ever get done.
for instance, how is it that a 16 year old can get pregnant, have unlimited sex and get married, yet a 17 year old cannot purchase pornography?? (in some areas at least)
To true! DO you know a 20 yr old can come back from the sandbox haveing carried an multitude of weapons everyday for the last yr or so but he can't get a carry permit in Minnesota untill he's 21....the law is the law... crazy as it may be......
Why does the average person in the year 2012 even need to own a gun (yet alone buy one)? The gun laws are in general outdated and not connected to reality.
Well -- take a look at illegal drugs -- they may be illegal but there are tons of them brought over the border every day and any 13 year old can get a supply of them. Same thing with weapons -- prohibition won't work.
In the USA...
an 18 year old can legally buy an AR 15 assault rifle (like was used in last night's Denver area massacre) but a 20 year can not legally buy a beer.
How about being able to buy high powered weapons and ammunition off the internet?
Age is an arbitrary thing. Nothing "happens" to a person when they turn 18, or 20, or 21, or 40. Some people are mature at 12 years old, to a point that many adults don't reach until they're middle aged.
As to why it's possible to buy guns at 18, but not alcohol.. I guess in the US, alcohol is considered more dangerous than guns. But again, the fact that a person turns 21, does NOT mean that all of a sudden, they are able to drink responsibly. Likewise, giving a gun to an 18-year-old might be a very foolish thing to do. It depends on who the person is. (Actually, guns are about the most useless thing there is, no matter who purchases them, but that's for another thread..)
Peace!

Actually, things do happen to someone when they turn a certain age.
The brain is physically different for an adult than an adolescent. The question is why do some people consider a 18 year old mature enough to buy and handle a gun, but not mature enough to handle a glass of wine.
Not one person has been able to provide one good explanation.
Why do you care??? What is the bigger problem??? That he can buy a gun @ 18 or can't drink beer???
Last time I checked... a gun doesn't impair judgment... But alcohol does...
Kind of makes a compelling argument...
