Why do threads involving gay stuff, Obama, pot, evolution, and Walmart generate so much interest?

If you were in a Walmart and standing by a gay black guy who was high as a kite and could conduct a rational conversation about evolution you'd be interested, too.

[what else are you going to do while waiting in line?]

•Obama is president and he's been effectively demonized by the powerful extreme rightwing in this country as a communist threat to American (even though he's center right)
•The gay rights movement is the civil rights movement of this era and is the most important social issue to many (on both sides)
•A lot of Americans like pot and want the freedom to enjoy it openly
•We're seeing a resurgence of fundamentalist Christianity, and it's very vocal about the fallacy of evolution
•Many Americas are repulsed by big-money corporate influence and also by what they view as a destructive consumerist culture - Walmart captures both better than any other entity
