I've often heard that coming from some who oppose capitalism. Can someone explain what that means?
I mean if you look at capitalist America it is reliant on consumers and workers for it to funtction. But the financial status of these American consumers and workers varies. Some are low income(underclass) people but many American consumers and workers are working class, middle class and wealthy. So it's not true in U.S capitalism that the system is totally dependent on poor underclass consumers and workers to function.
I think your confused. It's socialism that needs and always did need an underclass to exploit. Don't forget the soviet union and red china, north korea.
Who opposes capitalism in the US? You're talking about 1% of Americans who are powerless to change our economic system.
I'm a huge liberal, that favors big government domestic programs. I don't oppose capitalism. I oppose "crony capitalism" and "unregulated capitalism".
I agree. I don't think anyone could classify Henry Ford as crony or unregulated. Folks in his day thought he was crazy to pay double the wage that was prevalent at the time but it worked out because his employees could afford his cars and he got rich as well.
People point to things like the bank bailout as reasons why Capitalism doesn't work. The bailouts are not a part of Capitalism.
All "isms" have a theory abou thow they work and they all basically work in "theory" with the problem being that none of the theories take human nature into consideration.
Socialism works in theory but not in reality as nobody is willing to work hard and not getting anything more than the person that is lazy.
Absolute free market capitalism works in theory but again, human nature. It's why there has to be some regulations. Without those regulations nobody trusts the "other guy" with their money.

"No society can surely be flourishing and happy, of which the far greater part of the members are poor and miserable."
- Adam Smith
I wouldn't call Adam Smith a person opposed to capitalism, and certainly believe that capitalism is the way for a flourishing society. The problem begins when cronyism is mistaken for capitalism.
Did Adam Smith ever suggest that capitalism requires an underclass to exploit? This line of thinking usually comes from people who are marxist/socialist.

The people you are referring to are somebody at a Wall St protest, wearing a Rastafarian hat, and bordering on being homeless.
I'm sure FOX news has shown plenty of interviews with these people to make you think they exist in large numbers.
So Tea Party/elderly racist white males can feel so smug about how wise they are for not opposing capitalism .....LOL

Pathetic response.
Let us start with that quote. What does it tell you? A Marxist message that pre-dates Marx?
There will always be people at the bottom called poor. One only has to look at socialism and communism to see that their are two class the elite and the masses who are poor. this is why China truned to reform and a capitalist type econmic system to make the gains it has after deacdes of being like south korea.
