I'm starting this thread after a lengthy conversation with a police officer today. How do you posters feel about seatbelt laws? Personally, I feel like it gives officers too much authority. Nobody will be harmed, but yourself for not wearing a seatbelt. Shouldn't there be public awareness campaigns rather than law enforcement of the issue?

I went to trial over a seatbelt citation. I lost - but at least I made my point that the law is unjust.

Most everyone else in the courtroom was too intimidated to put up much of a fight.

The cop actually showed up - I did put him in a bad light - he was technically correct - but he was also being a nitpicker.

Why do you feel the seatbelt law is "unjust"?

Because you are doing no harm to anybody else by not wearing a seatbelt.

As a former firefighter/EMT i'm fully behind seatbelt laws and their enforcement.

If you've ever had to pick up body parts off of a road, you would understand.

I can agree with you to a point.

If you are involved in an accident and not wearing a seatbelt, your medical cost can be higher - and if you have insurance their payout is higher - and the more insurance companies pay out, it can impact the premiums others pay and cause the premiums can go up.

Should we outlaw motorcycles as well?

Very valid point. The insurance companies could just choose to raise your rates however if it is found that you were in an accident without a seatbelt.

And again, is legal enforcement the answer?

A young girl(she was 5 years old) died here in Southern California several years ago in a car fire. She burned to death. The culprit that prevented her from being saved was a child seat that she could not be freed from.

Does that explain my opposition to seatbelt laws?
