I'm starting this thread after a lengthy conversation with a police officer today. How do you posters feel about seatbelt laws? Personally, I feel like it gives officers too much authority. Nobody will be harmed, but yourself for not wearing a seatbelt. Shouldn't there be public awareness campaigns rather than law enforcement of the issue?

it's a way to make money nothing more,, they could give a crap about lives, it's money all the way.. here in the usvi they just up the fine for not wearing your seatbelt from $25 to $100 smackaroos.. chaching!!! i do wear mine now, not because it might save my life, but because i don't want to pay a hundred smackaroos to them
Because you are doing no harm to anybody else by not wearing a seatbelt.
I can agree with you to a point.
If you are involved in an accident and not wearing a seatbelt, your medical cost can be higher - and if you have insurance their payout is higher - and the more insurance companies pay out, it can impact the premiums others pay and cause the premiums can go up.

Very valid point. The insurance companies could just choose to raise your rates however if it is found that you were in an accident without a seatbelt.
A young girl(she was 5 years old) died here in Southern California several years ago in a car fire. She burned to death. The culprit that prevented her from being saved was a child seat that she could not be freed from.
Does that explain my opposition to seatbelt laws?
