Venezuelan authorities have arrested an American captain, and detained the crew. Their initial concern was drug smuggling, but the charges now seem to be arms smuggling, even though the arms in question were declared before the ship docked, and were for protection of the vessel from pirates.

Interesting that Interpol is involved. I suspect they are leading the investigation.

The arrest is a pressure tactic to get more information about something else. IMO

One of the crew members has been updating his Facebook page as this incident has been evolving.

Forbes Magazine has been tracking it, and has an interesting article. We all need to send beer!

Yup that sucks. I remember being detained while flying in Mexico for about 2 hours by Airport Security in Mexico City. Someone thought I looked like a suspected drug smuggler on a handout they get daily during rolecall meetings. That was not fun. It all ended well and we actually got bumped to some first class seats on our connecting leg to Ixtapa. This was in the 1990's though before the heavy drug catel problems and 911.

For anyone who is interested, the ship and its crew were released this morning. The details are sparse, I think we can assume that the owners of the ship payed a stiff fine.
