I read this in the paper on the way to work. Seems overboard to kill a disabled man with a pen. Maybe a tazer shot at best seemed sufficient. How could they not tell a pen from a firearm at close range like that?
Why not? Like someone else said, you can kill a person using just one arm. Wheelchairs and other props are a dime a dozen.
Don't blame the officers for the fact that the guy wasn't receiving proper treatment for whatever ailed him.
Police officers have lives and families who depend on them, too.
They also have mace, nightsticks, tasers, training, and various restraint and immobilization devices at their immediate disposal. This officer obviously has no business with a gun and a badge. The best spin you can put on this is that he "exercised poor judgement". I hope that an investigation shows that criminal charges should be filed against him. Civil charges, at a minimum.
Reminds of this time a cop almost shot at a deaf blind person for not responding to their command to "drop the weapon" because they thought the deaf blind person's cane was a gun.
Oh wait, that was me.
If it weren't for my friend turning around just in time to yank my cane out of my hand and show the officer what it really was, I'd be dead.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do a pen or blind cane even remotely look like weapons?
I agree with the OP on cops in general, but there are some cops that are just stupid. And if the guy was an inch to a foot away he should have seen that it was a pen. Jackass.

Then there's the cop in California that shot and killed a guy who had a garden hose 'pistol'.
There's a problem here and the police don't think so.
Next thing ya know the cop will end up being considered as a 'victim' in these cases.
Considering it was 230am it definitely would have been dark outside. We don't know how well lit the interior of the house was (if it was at all) and/or whether it was clearly evident that the suspect (shooting victim) was a double amputee. The office was cornered in an unfamiliar environment. And a pen can look like a knife if it is being waved about and you can't see it clearly. Until more information is available, I'll give the officer the benefit of the doubt.
[at a minimum, it is an extremely tragic mistake that cost the life of a man who probably harmless otherwise]
