Those "picky egg choosers" are practicing eugenics.
It's not the same as choosing a spouse where genetic considerations, which may or may not be present, are deeply subordinated. The "egg choosers" are shopping for the genetically perfect child, period.
Ever talk to someone working in a place where there is a catalog of the sperm from various donors? It's very interesting. It's not just white sperm buyers that want white sperm. Sometimes a short dark skinned couple will chose Italian sperm because blond blue eyed might be too far off.
It would make an interesting research topic for sure.
Catalog selections:
Sperm from a 5'3" 115 lbs, bookwormish male, very dark complexion, IQ 140
Sperm from a 6' 180 lbs, athletic male brown hair blue eyes, IQ 130
Sperm from a 6' 2", 190 outdoorsy male blond hair green eyes, IQ 125
Sperm from a 5'3" 100 lbs very pale blond hair faint blue eyes, IQ 150
This is only an issue because people are insecure. And so they get offended by anything that might conceivably make them feel undesirable.
If you had the choice between having an intelligent child, or an unintelligent child, you are going to choose intelligent. And regardless of the dislike to associate genes with intelligence. The only two factors regarding intelligence, are really nature and nurture. You are going to have the same nurture regardless, so there is no reason not to use nature to your advantage.
If you had the choice between a man who was 6'2", with an IQ of 140, good-looking, with no family history of major diseases. And a man who is 5'3", with an IQ of 80, fat, with family history of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Which one are you going to choose?
You must choose something.
People tend to be attracted to a certain type of appearance, and they tend to associate beauty with certain characteristics. As someone mentioned before, they might be attracted to Asian women, and think the Asian aesthetic is generally more attractive overall, and so they may desire for their own child to have that look. Others might think blonde/blue eyes are more attractive, and so they will want their child to have that look instead.
Where the problem comes in, is the fact that people who don't possess desirable traits, get their feelings hurt because they don't fit the specifications for desirability. And while in the real world, there will be ugly men, who will find themselves an ugly women to marry. In the world of genetics and IVF, the vast majority of people won't be wanted by anyone at all.
And in the case of "sperm donors", a person who is lucky enough to have the most desirable attributes, could make a good living doing nothing but jerking into a cup all day. While others simply won't have that opportunity. And that is obviously unfair.
But what can be done about it? Not only is it unrealistic to ignore the reality of genetics, but it is dangerous to ignore it as well. The more healthy the people in this world are, the better off we will all be.
For instance, people talk about "cures for cancer" all the time. But a lot of people are basically immune to certain types of cancers, because of the genes they possess. While others are more susceptible to certain types of cancers. Some people are more susceptible to heart disease as well, and diabetes, and a thousand other diseases. If hypothetically you could "breed humans", it would not take long before the average life expectancy would be well over the age of 100, and everyone would have IQ's which are currently in the "genius" range. As well as greatly limiting obesity, violence, substance abuse, as well as many other things.
I'm not saying we should do that, but I do disagree with the hostility towards women, because they are being selective as they are going in for IVF. I mean, do you think women shouldn't be allowed to choose their sperm donor? Do you think it just should be random? Never know what you're gonna get till it pops out? Sounds stupid.
And if I were part of a society where the better kind of people could be "made to order" (and lesser kinds of people aborted before they get here), I would want some say as to whose DNA my eventual neighbors would get.
Does that bother you in the least?
You appearing to be assuming that the people that are creating the SUPPLY are acting independently from the DEMAND.
Not to mention that the adoption market does NOT even remotely match the ethnic diversity in the USA.
Quick, what do you think the US ethnic make-up is of couples that can drop 50k on a service like this?
If a "gay gene" were to be discovered (unlikely in my view, but let's go with it), the person so burdened
Everyone catch this?
(Gays are only burdened when - and because - they have to fight the bigots who don't want them to have equal rights in our society.) Now back to the thread about the evils of parents wanting a child who looks like everyone else in the family and why the neighbors should have a say in it. Thrown as an inside slider claiming it's eugenics to help put across the argument that all of this is sinful and wrong.

Many Italians DO have blue eyes and are quite smart.
