It is not Liberal policy spending nor is it Conservative tax policies that are behind our enormous debt. It is the mega corporations and ultra-wealthy who spend billions of dollars lobbying (during elections and afterwards) who are bankrupting our country.
The facts speak for themselves. Corporations are sitting on top of a trillion dollars in profits while the top 1% have managed over the last two decades to increase their share of the wealth of the country from 20% to 40%, all while middle class America has seen its wealth share and income collapse.
How do they do it? By getting Congress to spend money on their pet projects, waste money on subsidies, and changing the tax code in ways that benefit the large corporations and top 1%. And also by getting the Federal Reserve to loan them money at 0% so that they can build overseas.
And while the ultra-wealthy are shoveling the money in their pockets, they have the Left and Right arguing about whether there should be prayer in school. The art of deflection and deception.
The people in office at the time of each debt increase are responsible.
Ultimately those who voted for the debt caused by tax gifts to the rich and spending gifts to large corporations, are responsible for the debt.
But look at how we get there. The money people, go out and seek some dweebs on both sides of the aisle (Democrats and Republicans who can barely put together a cohesive sentence, and then they put big money behind them to get them elected. Once in office, the dweebs just follow orders so that they can stay in office and the orders are usually to create loop holes in the tax code and spend money on wasteful projects and/or grand plans (e.g. healthcare) that benefit the largest corporations and the wealthiest in our country.

i agree, more or less. good post. what do you propose middle class americans do about it?
The U.S. spends over 17% of its gross national product on healthcare. That is roughly $2.7 trillion dollars. All other developed countries spend approximately 11%. We would save close to $1 trillion just by getting our healthcare expenses out of control. Our healthcare system is rife with fraud and dubious practices.
Does the U.S. get any additional benefits for the exorbitant amount of money that it spends upon healthcare supporting pharmaceuticals and hospitals alike? Nope. We have the worse life expectancy of any developed country ranking about number 50 in the world, worse than many undeveloped countries. One can make the case that the extra money we are spending is actually decreasing our life expectancy.
