Santa Claus (St. Nicholas) was a real person. I understand completely the reasons that he would be the perfect icon to be associated with a Christian Holy Day. I also wonder how his contemporary persona of a benevolent elf who caters to boundless greed and selfishness managed to wander so far from his beginnings as an humble disciple of Jesus' teachings...?
"His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering."
