Pretty much. I know a handful of actual Libertarians and I agree with them about 80% of the time. With that said most people who claim to be "Libertarians" and are in politics are just Republicans by another name.
It's become "chic" and it's the one opportunity for some of these terminal squares to be cool once in their lives. When you ask them for their specific positions, it quickly becomes clear that they are not libertarians by any stretch of the imagination.

You've never been to another country, have you? There's an amazing correlation between yokels who have never been to other countries and the belief that their country is the absolute best country in the history of mankind. It's uncanny.

Seriously, most of us are a mixture. I don't think anyone, in the country, that is honest with themselves doesn't have views the fall on all sides. I know I have some libartarian views, but I am certainly not a libartarian.

It's certainly not the greatest nation of all time. I'm not Hispanic in any way, shape, or form, but I don't see how that honor could go to any country but Spain. A global Catholic empire without rival, which transformed populations rather than replacing them, whose culture was successfully transplanted to the people of an entire continent. Not even the English could pull that off.

It all depends on your definition of "greatest." At least you have some reasons for your opinion. The person who made the original assertion, like so many others, doesn't really have any reasons for his opinion. They believe what they are told and can't be bothered to actually think about what they say or find supporting evidence. It's the primacy of belief rather than reason.
