If the president stayed at the White House over the holidays the whiners would be complaining that he's preventing the cleaning and kitchen staff there from getting time off over the holidays. There isn't anything he could do that would please the whiners except maybe kill himself and then they'd complain about the method he choose.
By the way, the queen of birthers just got another slap down from a judge who told her that she should know evidence isn't something you print off the internet.
The same amount of money would be spent, or even more, if he went anywhere in the country. The POTUS is not a prisoner of the WH. Get over your silly selves complainers, you look real ignorant.

It costs that much because that's what it is and it's up to Congress to change the budget for the president. We aren't some third world country that needs to keep our elected leader on a shoestring budget and risk him being assassinated, or expect him to tool around in a jeep.

3/4 of that 4 million would still be spent if the president stayed in D.C., secret service being the bulk of the cost involved in anything the president and his family does. The communications set up and logistics involved keeping a president---any president---safe is not and should not be an optional cost of government based on whether or not you hate the guy. If you're going to complain that he doesn't need to go as far as Hawaii, his home state, then we might as well make a new law that anyone from Hawaii and Alaska can't run for president....that's how silly you whiners sound....because you don't want to pay for him/her to return home for 4 or 8 years.

Well, happily for you it sounds like the Obama's may be buying a home in Hawaii and therefor won't have to "rent a place".
Regardng your comparison to the Royal Family - you DO know don't you that the Royal Family holds vast tracks of land the people of the UK pay rent on don't you? - thus they provide for much of their own upkeep (or more precisely the people of the UK provide for it in what is (in effect) a "hidden tax" to the Royal Family). So, since both the Queen and the President are the "Heads of State" of their respective countries, maybe - since you are comparing the two - all income derived from Federal land should be given to whoever the current President is to offset their "cost" to tax payers - at least if you want to do an "apples to apples" comparison. THEN maybe you could realistically compare the "cost" of the two.
