I'm watching Bill O'Reilly right now and he believes there should be affirmative action for public universities to hire conservative professors because the majority are liberals as of now.
Isn't this big daddy government conservative republicans hate?
Maybe if they didn't demonize a career in teaching, there would be more conservative teachers!

Maybe if there were a few out there with half a brain there would be more of them!!!!!!
Although whenever this topic comes up, I do have to ponder one thing - how do we know the political leanings of every professor? I'm sure they do lean left overall, since most academic fields naturally appeal to the liberal set (for a whole slew of possible reasons). But in the seven years I attended college and graduate school, I can only think of ONE professor who openly wore their political leanings on their sleeve... and I only know that because it was an election year, and she had Gore stickers on her office door. Other than that, I honestly have no idea which ones were left vs right vs centrist.
Do people really believe college classes are conducted in such a blatantly biased manner? Not at my schools, they weren't! We learned the subjects at hand, and political-type discussions or opinions were only seen in classes where it related to the subject. I'd love to conduct a poll some time, to see how many of these "colleges are liberal indoctrination centers" types actually ever attended any college.
Most "college professors" aren't talking politics unless they are teaching on the subject.
Interesting idea though, since you can't really prove your political leanings and could earn some extra points by checking the "conservative" box during the hiring process regardless of your real leanings. HAHAHAHA!

It is indeed. Institutionalized government bigotry is never an appropriate response. Regardless of whether it is based upon the color of someone's skin, their sex, or their political affiliation.

Pretty much this. Outside of their 101 sciences classes and perhaps an arts or philosophy elective most business or communications majors coming out of state schools aren't exactly getting indoctrinated with whatever O'Riley and others define as liberal thought.
This whole idea is very stupid, but some of my Conservative friends have said the same thing as Bill O'Reily. They think the college system is brainwashing the youth of America. I don't understand why Republicans think students are so stupid that they can't think for themselves.

No, it's just Bill O'Reilly being a clown. When a serious conservative intellectual or statesman proposes such a thing, it's worth discussing. When AEI or Cato produce a paper on it, let me know.
The universities could use some fresh air, certainly. The intellectual atmosphere, particularly when it comes to political matters, is stale almost everywhere in academe. Even the laissez-faire liberalism espoused by Hayek and Freidman (and which, risibly, people here call "conservatism") is now half a century old and stale as a crypt. But the right-wing infotainers know nothing about the topic; their remarks on it are pointless.
