Who are we protecting ourselves from? The Chinese, the Russians, who because everyone thinks it's ok to own a militia's month supply at home.
Do you live in NYS?

Because here in NYS, we just don't have that experience.

Go try and get a pistol permit in Nassau County, for example, and then tell me how bad it is with all the guns around.

I know plenty of people here on LI and upstate that have enough guns for a militia. There is nothing wrong with it, but they are def, wayy over the top.

Exactly. Many states are neither here nor there when it comes to gun laws. NY is so strict that it's not worth owning anything other than a long gun for the avg law abiding citizen. If I apply now, I may possibly own one by late 2014. Either get rid of them all or ease up the rules (plus CCW which is impossible here) for responsible, sane people.

The extremeness is because of the above.

There is definitely a higher homicide/assault rate per capita (higher by 20x in the US) because of the easy availability of guns. You can even see it if you overlay the state comparisons of strict laws vs assault from guns rate (Aside from MI--which Detroit is almost definitely skewing):

Let's start with the fact that states with the least gun ownership had the lowest rate of death's by guns. Then let's proceed to Gun Deaths per 100,00 Population (USA 5.92, England .2 Scotland .2 Japan 0.04) So your general number about 50-60mm Vs. 300MM does not carry much weight.

I agree with you here. Some of these guys buy a gun every time they have any extra money. (nothing wrong with spending your money but do you really need over 100guns.

So if you ban guns, some crazy will get it illegally and kill people. Even if no one ever gets their hands on another gun, they'll resort to other objects such as knives, bombs, driving cars into crowds of people, etc...

Its not the object being used, its the nut using the object to kill others.

And no I am not saying that I am for or against guns, I'm just looking at this from a logical perspective.

^ Yeah, everyone knows that.

But how many more shootings do we need before something is at least tried. Its getting out of control.

No one is concerned with gun regulations until its their kid or family member who is getting buried.

Do they comment on mental illness?

Slippery slope. Next someone will say the press is dangerous and we should get rid of the press.

You logic is excluding the emotional and seductive appeal of a powerful weapon that can be held in the hand, and seeing it a mere extension of the person and part of their own power rather than a separate device. There's a whole pathological psychology of the susceptible wrapped up in this. A quick fix of empowerment is often being pursued.

Video games where you plant a bomb and then run off aren't popular for a reason....
