From the study published in Science Magazine.

Race, Ethnicity, and NIH Research Awards

Throughout the education pipeline, blacks are less likely to graduate from high school, attend college and major in biomedical science, and obtain a Ph.D. in biomedical science. Nevertheless, upon entering the biomedical academic career track, black and white faculty members are equally likely to be tenured at institutions that grant doctorates and at Research I institutions. (3). Given our previous results, we expected to find that black scientists who made it to the stage of principal investigator would have similar chances of obtaining NIH funding, all other things being equal. We find it troubling that the typical measures of scientific achievement—NIH training, previous grants, publications, and citations—do not translate to the same level of application success across race and ethnic groups. Our models controlled for demographics, education and training, employer characteristics, NIH experience, and research productivity, yet they did not explain why blacks are 10 percentage points less likely to receive R01 funding compared with whites.

I've seen cases where kids don't self-segregate. It's all about where you live and what the prevailing social attitudes are.
And in reality, it's actually the government itself promoting racism by having it on all the government forms including the census, finanical aid applications, etc.

Anyone who really wants to wipe out racism would demand that the government stop considering it. People don't need to see themselves in racist terms --- except it's forced whenever we fill out some government application or form. Try to enroll kids in a public school without some idiot telling you that you must check off some race checkbox.

It isn't racist to acknowledge that people are different, and have different experiences. IT is racist to use those differences to discriminate.

Racism will bot be magically erased by removing the checkboxes any time soon. We have lots of bagage about race etc. In my book there are two key things that need to happen:
1. People need to recognize that each person you deal with is an individual with a unique perspective. They do not represent their entire group.
2. People need to have meaningful relationships with a diverse set of people. Once you have befriended many "someones" who are not like you, it is a whole lot easier to see people as individuals and find commonality, even if you have different backgrounds.

Since the inception of the United States unitl the 1960s White Americas have instituted laws and government policies to separate people by race and in doing so race and culture have to a certain sense become intertwined.
Bingo! There isn't anybody here who can make a valid argument against what you just posted.

And at what age does this "self segregation" start? With small children you don't see this.

malamute, I'm very disappointed in your conclusion blaming racism on government data collection.

I'll break down proactive management for you since you don't seem to understand it. First off, the ability to manage proactively is greatly influenced by your ability to measure. Get it? Check boxes identifying race, gender, etc. are meant to tally data for the purpose of measurement not discrimination. There wouldn't be a need to collect/tally racial, ethnicity, gender, etc. data if there wasn't a history of discriminating against certain groups here in America. So the reasons we collect this data is counter to hypothesis. It's to prevent exclusion based off things like race! And one way to reduce racism is by highlighting it. Anybody making claims without data will be fighting the battle of opinions. This type of data collection is a tool in the chest of righteousness...
