We've all heard them refer to themselves as the "Freedom Caucus" and the "Tea Party" but the reality is that these clowns seem to consider the federal government (which they've sworn to serve) as some sort of alien power whose purpose is to oppress their benefactors.
A very on-point piece written by a Republican pundit:
Conservatives started talking about the Reagan “revolution,” the Gingrich “revolution.” Among people too ill educated to understand the different spheres, political practitioners adopted the mental habits of the entrepreneur. Everything had to be transformational and disruptive. Hierarchy and authority were equated with injustice. Self-expression became more valued than self-restraint and coalition building. A contempt for politics infested the Republican mind.
I'm old enough to recall when the GOP cuddled up to the rabid religious right. At the time, I still voted GOP. I've since come to my senses. But it is very entertaining to see the Republican Party splitting at the seams as a result of this idiotic move back in the 80s. No less than Barry Goldwater tried to warn them that it would be disastrous, but the movers and shakers were far too wise to take his advice.
Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.

I wonder what these political geniuses are thinking now?
no. they are not incompetent and you KNOW full well they didn't swear to sever the government.
That isn't the truth but it works well telling the great unwashed that great fallacy.
they swore to uphold the constitution. That is vastly different.
Agreed, they do not view the government as "some sort of alien power whose purpose is to oppress their benefactors" as the OP suggests, they view many of the politicians in both political parties as corrupt, using their elected office as a means of enriching themselves and their political and corporate cronies.
It amazes me how liberals are all on board with the looting of the US Treasury by the crony corporatists in government. Are they blind to all this, or does their political party politics truly trump everything?
PS, the stated goal of the Freedom Caucus is to get a speaker that will allow regular order.
they are backing a guy named Webster from florida who was speaker of the florida house and has a track record.
PS, his "conservative rating" is about 68. He is no hardliner.

Excellent editorial, it was a very good read. I agree entirely with Mr. Brooks.
I especially agree with this paragraph:
Quote:
Basically, the party abandoned traditional conservatism for right-wing radicalism. Republicans came to see themselves as insurgents and revolutionaries, and every revolution tends toward anarchy and ends up devouring its own.
and
Quote:
All of this has been overturned in dangerous parts of the Republican Party. Over the past 30 years, or at least since Rush Limbaugh came on the scene, the Republican rhetorical tone has grown ever more bombastic, hyperbolic and imbalanced. Public figures are prisoners of their own prose styles, and Republicans from Newt Gingrich through Ben Carson have become addicted to a crisis mentality. Civilization was always on the brink of collapse. Every setback, like the passage of Obamacare, became the ruination of the republic. Comparisons to Nazi Germany became a staple.
Instead of anger and bombast we need to offer solutions, serious solutions rooted in reality.

The system is working as designed. The Establishment is scared that they are going to lose power and fortunes. The Establishment lost 2 POTUS elections in a row and the TP won 2 midterms in a row. I wouldn't listen to Karl Rove on anything.
