Perhaps because of the Second Amendment but I don't see how Gregory is entitled to break the law. I know the press is given certain accommodations but possessing a magazine from a weapon that has been determined to be illegal is going beyond that.
I don't think he's automatically entitled to break the law just because he's a member of the national media, but I do think that additional scrutiny could/should be brought to DC's questionable gun laws through the power of 1st Amendment freedom of speech rights via a pretty powerful news organization. Should he be charged with a gun-related crime, I could see this being pushed to the far reaches of the judiciary for the sole purpose of clarifying 1st Amendment and 2nd Amendment rights.
Let me clarify, Gregory holding up a magazine and saying "this is a replica of AR-15 magazine because it's illegal for me to hold a real one" pretty much destroys the use of the magazine as a prop...
Having said that your speculations certainly sound plausible too. It would be humorous if the end result of this is lifting all bans on those magazines.
The NRA could come to Gregory's defense, they're a pro gun lobbyist organization aren't they?
Adam Lanza broke no laws until he mowed down 26 people, right?
How about David Gregory not breaking the law in the first place? If I were the NRA, I tell him to pound sand. It was them he was going after with all this hysterical dramatic BS to begin with.
The NRA has come to his defense before he even broke the law because they have forcefully argued against this law to begin with. I'm asking you what specifically is it you expect them to do other than point out the law he broke needs to be repealed?
It's law and he broke it, do you really expect them to argue he should get special treatment?

People break laws everyday, some people are smart enough not to get caught breaking laws, in Gregory's case, I'll go out on a limb and say he broke a law, and was caught by a right winger breaking a law.
how dumb.
should Gregory receive preferential treatment? didn't Bush?
