It's a shame that Republicans belittle adults who work low-wage jobs and then at the same time belittle the unemployed for not going out and getting one of those jobs.
In the US I often see young people who can't pay their rent on time play with an expensive iPhone. I don't even have one.
Their values are totally messed up.
You are right, their values are those of entitlement. Someone else has one, we should have one.
People no longer understand that you have to take care of the essentials, before having luxuries.
I remember my first apartment, second hand furniture, eating lots of mac and cheese, rice, and hamburger was a luxury. Lived there for 2 months before we could afford a telephone. We had to remember to turn off lights, we kept it cold in the winter, and warm in the summer, had fans all over, so we could keep our electric bill low.
Our apartment was next to a bus stop, and we took the bus many times to refrain from driving, to save gas. (Of course the bus was 50 cents at the time LOL).
We took care of the important things, before we worried about partying, or anything else that was recreational, or unnecessary.

Really?
Stating the fact that lifelong minimum wage earners are low skilled is belittling?

That is not the mindset anymore. The consumer mentality has taken over.
And if you can't afford the essentials there's a government program to help you.
And the requirements for those government programs have been laxed over the past 4 years.
You always had to have a job in the past to qualify for food stamps (with exceptions) but not anymore.

Since when is telling the truth belittling?
The belittling comes from saying, " 'they' (the pejorative form of they) lack ambition to get more education, training, etc". Some of these folks simply can't do any higher level work. There are few jobs left in this country where a HS drop-out can make $40-50K/yr.

NOT IN EVERY CASE! IME, very few people who "don't need the money" work. Very few work for a hobby.

Conservatives don't belittle entry level work. That is how many of us got started. Started. You don't attempt to live on those unskilled min wage jobs forever.
It is no coincidence that those states with substantial illegal populations ( not just talking about Mexico) have a lot of businesses who hire illegals to do jobs no one else will. This country was built on the backs of immigrants, legal and illegal, willing to take any job, at any wage.
It's not doing jobs that no one else will do, it's doing jobs off the books for substantially less than on the books is what is happening. Americans haven't stooped that low but illegal have and employers have really nothing to fear for hiring them except a small fine. Construction is notorious for this.
In rural areas, the packing/slaughtering plants are full of illegals. The USDA isn't ICE remember and the USDA is there to check the food, not the people.
Reality is a different story than what you read in the MSM. I'm out here living among people who USED to work at a poultry processing plant making decent wages for a rural area.
The paltry fines and lack of jail time do nothing to prevent this.
It's a puzzle to be sure! If you can't survive on minimum wage, then minimum wage is too low. How many people have jobs but still need government assistance just to get by? If having a job was enough to live on
Then there's this nonsensical outcry from the GOP faithful to abolish minimum wage entirely. This is one of my many points that led me to realize just how crazy the GOP really is. Sadly, the Dems are as bad or worse.
Ideally, anybody in America working 40 hours a week should make enough money for rent, food, clothing, transportation for their family and still have a little money to spare. That is not the world we live in. It'll be very very hard to fix it, no question about it. Having the instant-crutch of government assistance isn't helping either.
If you can't survive on minimum wage, then GET A JOB THAT PAYS MORE THAN MINIMUM WAGE. It was never meant to be a wage to support a family on.
