Algerian special forces have freed 650 hostages from Islamist militants who seized a gas complex deep in the desert, but the fate of some foreign workers remains unclear.
Of those taken hostage Wednesday, 573 were Algerians, according to the state-run Algerian Press Service news agency. It said 100 of the 132 foreign workers held in the hostage crisis have been freed.
The U.S. is evacuating between 10 and 20 people caught up in the hostage-taking, a U.S. defense official told CNN on Friday."

Hopefully they can be released or rescued as well. From what I understand, this "jihadist" is really just a brigand that regularly kidnaps people for money. We can probably expect a ransom to be given to BP thru backdoor channels.
I haven't seen or heard any mention that the plant had any security. Being that it is near the border of Libya, and Algeria has been a hell hole for a long time, I would have thought there would have been some sort of security - especially being in a "hot spot".
Did anyone ever see the movie "Buried" from a few years ago? It's about a man buried alive and held for ransom by terrorists in Iraq. He's one of the contract workers driving a truck, not a member of the military. Of course the U.S. government won't negotiate with the terrorists who are demanding $2 million for his freedom.
There's a pretty grim history of contract workers, especially in Iraq, having inadequate security protection.
I would be surprised if a company like BP, whom I consider pretty slack when it comes to safety, having good measures in place. Might interfere with profits a bit.
Seems that hostage situation is over now, basically everyone is dead, the remaining hostages as well as the terrorists. It may sound harsh as innocent people were killed, but I guess terrorists will think twice before they try something like that again in Algeria
