This is exactly what I have been saying. China has used tactics like this for hundreds of years. She has become the owner of the South East Asian economies and holds the power in that area without dispatching one soldier or firing one shot. Government owned or not China has always been business oriented (pun not intended). Her use of socialist tactics has been temporary and its purpose was to get rid of the foreign powers that made China "the sick man of Asia) for 100 years.
A friend of mine from Shanghai once told me that communism would never last in China because it contained two things that go against the grain with the Chinese It prohibits private ownership and out laws gambling. The Chinese cannot live with out these two things. Now in the 21st century she is throwing off the cloak of socialism, having had it for less that 70 years and look at cities like Shanghai. They have more casinos than our entire country. Business IS a gamble and the Chinese know this. They are formidable opponents at the faro board and in the board room.
I recently went to visit my daughter who lives in Spain and was surprised to see all the Chinese businesses medium and small that have grown in that country. The Chinese now own most of the bread retail outlets and the bakeries in central and southern Spain and are moving into the heart of Spain's economic center which is the northeast (Catalonia).
Napoleon said "When China moves, the world moves." Well after lying dormant for 150 years China is moving again. I am not surprised like the symbol of the Chinese Phoenix she has again risen from the ashes that was Qing China and the first Republic to economic success and this has happened numerous times in her 5000 year history. She was an economic super power before Europe was a power and she is simply assuming her position in the natural order of things. Who needs a 2 million man army to conquer the world. The West may not be able to stop her momentum if we don't start soon and as the article aludes...it may already be too late. Doomsday? No, just history repeating itself.
China used trade agreements and not guns to take over countries.
Just look at Africa. Hillary went there a few times but talk is cheap; they are doing business with the Chinese instead.
Look at Iraq..we fought the war for them and China waltzes in and does the oil deal with them.
We are fools. We spend our time chasing the boogieman all over the world to fight with him (terrorists).

And we nation-build these countries to help them recover and when they do, they are ready to wheel-and-deal.
