People are pointing out Chicago for various reasons.President Obama being from Chicago is one thing. Another reason is that for some, Chicago represented a city with very strict gun laws. Some people point to Chicago because for some, Chicago represents everything they hate.

Doesn't NYC have stricter gun laws? What about the suburbs surrounding Chicago, don't they have strict gun laws also?
Wouldn't the better question be "Why are Americans so violent to begin with"? I've read that the Swiss and Canadians probably own more guns per capita than Americans yet they don't kill each other at the same rate.
Any majority black city will rival chicago's crime rate.
I think people spotlight Chicago specifically because Obama "organized communities" there and the sheer number of deaths, not the crime rate, dwarfs other black hellholes with higher crime rates aka Camden.
It's definitely because of Obama's roots there, but keep in mind that Chicago is also a very large city (third largest in the US!) while Gary is pretty puny. It's pretty much 80,000 people with a ton (a TON) of poverty. Whereas Chicago has almost 3 million residents in the city proper, with a much better economy. That's why it's such a big deal. Other large cities don't seem to be quite as bad as Chicago.

While small towns tend to have lower crime rates, Gary's homicide rate is much higher than Chicago's
