Actually, geography throws a curve into the concept. There are, for example, many people in the Americas who resemble Native Americans, Africans or various mixes whose haplogroups would signify that they were of European ancestry. And that is very deceptive because haplogroups signify only the genetic signature of one very distant ancestor. Three people who look very much alike and share a high percentage of genetic similarity could still show up as being from three different continents because of the varied origins of each of their distant progenitors, while on the other hand, those who share a haplogroup may actually have very little in common in terms of phenotype or genotype.
