According to FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2011, of the 12,664 murders committed by firearm, 75% were done by convicted felons and 20% from juveniles or less than 21 years old. That's 95% of murderers who can't have guns legally - they aren't lawful gun owners.
Even we assume the high number of the rest of 5% murders were indeed committed by lawful gun owners (bad assumption because many could be criminals but don't have prior conviction), that is still a tiny percentage compared to 100 million lawful gun owners (estimated 36% of American are lawful gun owners).
If I calculate, it would be 0.0006% (12,664x5%/100,000,000) or 0.6 murder in 100,000 lawful gun owners compared to 4.8 in the general population.
In another word, the general population is 8 (4.8/0.6) times more likely to commit murders than lawful gun owners.

And why not compare this also to concealed carry permit holders, those trigger happy cowboys.
Quote:
* As of July 31, 2010, Florida has issued 1,825,143 permits and has 746,430 active licensees,[105] constituting roughly 5.4% of the state's population that is 21 years of age or older.[106]

* From the outset of the Florida right-to-carry law through July 31, 2010, Florida has revoked 5,674 or 0.3% of all issued permits. Of these:
• 522 permits were revoked for crimes committed prior to licensure
• 4,955 permits were revoked for crimes committed after licensure, of which 168 involved the usage of a firearm.[109]

I did not see the part about convicted felons & murders in the report (doesn't mean it's not there, i just did not see it) - but something being called a felony is based on the length of punishment rather then the crime. Bernie Madoff is a convicted felon..........
But the reports state that 1/5th of murders are by family members of the victim, and 1/4 are by known people (friends, acquaintances. co-worker, boyfriend/girlfriend).
and
43.6 percent of murders were reported in the South
21.0 percent were reported in the West
20.6 percent were reported in the Midwest
14.8 percent were reported in the Northeast.

I'm sure it was an accident to leave out that the south is the most populous region in the country by far.
I think you anti gun people are worrying about the wrong crowd. You should worry about yourself and your comrades. :-)
Sorry to disappoint you, but most of us are gun owners, and are not anti-gun.
We just believe that some regulations, are necessary.
