Sure, he never nurtured her. But isn't that what the mother is for? And given the leverage family courts grant the mother in custody and support determinations, I'd say they agree. The father is the breadwinner and provider. So, he did his part as far as I'm concerned.
The racial element to me is neither here nor there...he was married. He would have acted the same way if it was a white woman. Now, would a white woman have ever been his maid at the time? Of course, not. But I digress...
"Nurtured?" He didn't provide continuous child support for her or maintenance for her mother. Ms. Washington-Williams was far too gracious and understanding as to make a posthumous indictment of Senator Thurmond; she was grateful that he paid for her education. He was her father, albeit a distant and complex one. Aside from college, Thurmond was essentially a deadbeat dad and, as others have noted, guilty of statutory rape. Race is an essential component as to why her existence was kept a secret; it's hard to stand on a platform of segregation when you've been intimate with one of the people from whom you're trying to deny equality, and had a child with as well.

I think daughter of Storm thurmond would of been good enough. Funny how racist you can be and not know it
No, I think it makes perfect sense to point out the fact that the daughter of Strom Thurmond, a notorious and avowed racist, happened to be black. The ironies in that and the questionable nature of the relationships Thurmond had with his daughter and his baby mama were more than notable enough to warrant inclusion of Essie Mae's race in the discussion.
The man committed adultery and statutory rape.....and race is the main reason why this went under wraps?
Oooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk...........
Sure. Had Thurmond done what he did to a white woman, he might have been prosecuted, but had that not happened, he certainly would have tried to have more of a parental relationship with his daughter.

Strom liked his snapper fresh off the hook...at least he cleaned up his mess.
You sound like quite the humanitarian.
