Many people are trying to determine the answer to this question. Some say it is for government handouts. Others quote increased opportunity. Which is it and why?

Mostly because the Republicans, via their policies & talking points (not to mention their attitudes and manners), make it perfectly clear they do not either want nor value a single black vote. In fact, with their constant overt racism towards blacks and their constant demonization of blacks (not to mention the half century long historical FACT which is conservative racism against blacks) that they both hate and despise blacks.

This is why 98% of blacks refuse to vote for Republicans. This is why very few Asians vote Republicans (well, that and the excessive attempts to legislate religion on to everyone else), this is why Jews don't vote Republican (same disclaimer as Asians), why Muslims don't vote Republican (same disclaimer times three), and why Hispanics don't really vote Republican (the racism pisses them off plus the outright hatred of the poor). At some point you have to stop blaming everyone else and actually accept reality. You made your bed, son, now sleep in it.

BTW Republicans didn't do themselves any favors by attempting to surpress the vote of legal US citizens in 2008 & 2012 who just so happened to not be white. Not only did your attempts to prevent non-whites from voting backfire (because so many enraged non-whites showed up despite restrictions by Republicans because they wanted to make sure their votes were counted) but now very few of them will ever vote for you in the future. Would you vote for the group which tried to prevent you and people like you from voting simply because of your race?

Why? Because many conservatives make it abundantly clear that they only tolerate white conservatives like themselves... so hispanics, blacks, gays, etc. all get the picture that Republicans look down on them and do not want their votes. And so naturally, they all go and vote for Democrats instead. And then Republicans act surprised that they lose elections, for some strange reason. Kinda funny when you think about it.

As has been pointed out NUMEROUS TIMES on this forum. The exodus from the Republican Party began in earnest with the election of Franklin Roosevelt as a result of the New Deal and for beginning to break down the walls of racial segregation as the result of war time policies that opened employment opportunities for African Americans. This was rapidly followed by Truman's integration of the military. There was a slight return to the Republican fold of Dwight Eisenhower, in no small part as a result of his stature and his forceful use of Federal troops and marshalls to implement the Brown decision integrating the Little Rock Ark, public schools but returned to the Democratic Party with during the Kennedy/Nixon election of 1960. The die was cast for wholesale abandonment of the Republican Party during the 1964 then President Johnson and GOP challenger Barry Goldwater as a result of Johnson push to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964. African Americans haven't looked back sense.

PS please see Southern Strategy.

I wish we could make this a damned sticky....

Republicans have a tendency to talk down to black voters. They think it's outreach, but a lot of black people consider it condescending and hypocritical. That's for the present. You could write a novel about the realignment of blacks from the Republican to the Democratic party which I won't go into but the key words are Kennedy, Johnson, Civil Rights Act, and Southern Strategy
