For most people Christmas is about opening presents (delivered by a jolly old man from the North Pole) around a decorated pagan evergreen.

Actually most schools mark it as "Good Friday" holiday, or some part of spring break. Here in New York City and New Jersey, it is a holiday of its own. Our public schools also observe main Jewish holidays.
My kids never had Good Friday off unless it was part of spring break, which was (still is) the last week in March.

Good Friday has always been a teacher workday down here in S. Florida - even when I was a student (back when dinosaurs walked the earth ).

LOL! During that dinosaur period (I am similar in age to you) in PA we had GF and Easter Monday off.

I should have clarified that I'm talking about the school district in which I live in Colorado in my previous post. Not every district in CO has the last week in March for spring break.

It should be a holiday because majority of Americans are Christians, and other nations with large Christian majority or minority observes the holiday.

There's also no holiday between President's Day and Memorial Day (3 months), so Good Friday will be a good holiday in between, which will also create a 3-day holiday Easter weekend. U.S. financial and stock market is closed, and so are many public schools and many private businesses.

Yeah, I understand that 'separation of church and state", but there are always and have been exceptions. Many other secular countries observes the holiday too.
I've never worked for a company that had good friday off. . .

I think the whole HOliday (Federal ) is crap. Why should we pay these numb nuts for more days off. F' that

I worked for a health dept in Illinois that gave us Good Friday off until the state told them to stop doing it. (At least that's what our director said when he discontinued it.) We did get Lincoln's birthday off as a separate holiday from President's Day!

My daughter works in a hospital where they get to choose their own holidays IIRC.

That might explain why it wasn't declared a federal holiday in the past 60 years as the commie liberals started turning America into an atheist hell-hole, but what about before then? Christmas became a national holiday in 1870. If no one found the need to declare Good Friday a holiday between then and when this "anti-Christian sentiment" started creeping in, perhaps there was a reason.
