Because there is NO WASTE in the government. They tell you that every single time.
It's not until media uncovers the fraud that they step up "to the rescue" with reform and then pat themselves on the back for saving us billions. That's how government works.

Then all Americans needs to stop this and there is plenty of government waste. If he can not leave this alone he stop worry about his green energy plans and cut waste before dreaming of touching this. Are we playing the fiscal cliff dance again but this time using social security as his pawn?

winter_sucks and yes it does. I don't want to get into it. You and I both know there is plenty of government waste.

Some waste? Yes. Enough to really put a dent in our deficit? No.

Also, it is important to note that conservatives have repeatedly said that cutting the growth rate of spending isn't actually cutting spending. Ironically now that Obama has proposed slowing the growth of Social Security some conservatives are claiming that that is cutting Social Security.

winter_sucks, I don't care to get into a p**ing match with you about political party. Bottom line, cutting waste and corruption, both sides would help. I will go back to reading about it.

You say no but we really don't know how much and how bad it is.

They just reformed the Lifeline program.
We spent $2 billion a year.
41% of the people getting the lifeline phone didn't qualify.
That's nearly $1 billion in just that one program that we saved.

Imagine going through the 83 means tested programs the government does run ?

And the pentagon...$998K to send a $.20 washer from Florida to Texas ?
Or $450K to ship 3 screws to Iraq ?
If a package is marked "priority" there is NO OVERSIGHT and that was per the Pentagon.

And this is just what the MSM uncovers which is probably the tip of the iceberg here.

If you're talking about the Defense budget, yeah. There's plenty of fat there. I'm pretty sure he was talking about discretionary spending. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and Defense are the bulk of the budget. Until anyone actually puts out some ideas about cuts and reforms in those areas, simply saying cut government waste doesn't really mean anything.

The government knew boomers were going to retire and the numbers will increase for the next 10 years until we reach the height of the baby boom generation.

Slow the growth by cutting payments ? And while prices all over increase ?
All you'll end up doing is moving these people onto the food stamp and medicaid rolls because they are seniors and not working anymore.

If he cuts now then the government will have to continue to cut for the next decade.
What will be left ?

Government waste has been covered many times over and over. They just ignore it and would rather go into a chess game playing with people's lives. Got to love government huh. We are pawns in the game. Threatening to cut social security is part of the strategy to win the game. It's pretty simple really. The more people that depend on them the more powerful they are.

I've said, let them take a dime they will keep coming back for more. No group is safe, not even the elderly.
