It was never proven that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. FactCheck.org : No WMDs in Iraq
We went to war because Sadaam was trying to trade oil in Euros, not over WMD's.

In short, it had very little to do with freedom.

But Bush sold the public on the idea that it was about WMDs.

So far, the government has spent $1.7 trillion on the war, but that's not counting $490 billion in veterans' benefits, which could grow to more than $6 trillion over the next 40 years once interest is added in, Reuters reports.

The Iraq War Cost How Much?! - Depending on how you count, as much as $7.7T
9-11 was a neo-con dream come true - it gave them all they needed to justify the invasion - a tragedy for the American economy, and mostly for the Iraqi people.

'The Iraq war, which most today in the U.S. see as a mistake, has cost the U.S. trillions of dollars, billions of which were "wasted."

But the devastation for the people of Iraq is incalculable: hundreds of thousands have been killed, over a million remain refugees and U.S. weapons used in the country, such as depleted uranium, have left a haunting legacy far past the drawdown of U.S. troops.'

Less than 1 Trillion of it has been spent under Obama so far. These are expenses into the future to get to that number. So it is less than 1/6th of Obama's total new debt added. Obama also chose to double down on Afghanistan and expand it beyond Bush and he chose to push back his initial quicker campaign pledge of an Iraq withdrawal and then followed Bush's timeline.

So part of these future expenses are also on Obama's choices.

I find it odd that some Keynesians will say that any government spending is good, some will literally say that paying someone to dig a hole and then fill it up will stimulate the economy and then in the next breath speak of spending this disagree with as the downfall of the government finances.

With all of that said...yes Bush screwed up.

The cost was $806 billion according to the CRSC
10 years later, many see Iraq War as costly mistake

Why the ongoing need to make up numbers from the left? 3 trillion according to Stiglitz, and now its bumped up to 7 trillion???? Lefties, please get your ducks in a row and get your made up numbers all on the same page. It was about 3% of federal spending and will never come close to the ballooning of the debt by Pres. Obama.
