We definitely need age of consent laws. It protects children from nasty, old men and it protects nasty, old men from gun-welding parents. There's no lose on this. If you fall in love with someone young, keep it on the cuddle level until they're old enough to make it sexual.

It's funny that I've only seen this issue brought up by old men. Always.

It's legal for 14-year-olds to do a lot of things a parent might not permit. Maybe in my home I don't allow video games or R-rated movies or potato chips. That's on me to enforce, not anyone else.

And, aesthetic considerations aside, if someone's 14-year-old is sexually active it's probably better for them to be with an older person than someone as young and immature as they are--someone who knows about contraceptives, STDs, discretion, and is in general a person from whom they could learn something about life. Why we seem to reflexively prefer 'the blind leading the blind' is hard to fathom.

Is this thread the starting of legal pedophilia? Maybe that is next---old men with any age girl they want. Our society is getting sicker all the time.

Nice sales pitch from a pedofile. I would say someone who is older would come with STDs of his own to spread around. If you have to teach discretion it's because you know how to hide what you are doing with young girls and don't want to be caught.

This is what makes the show on Dateline going. Get on the Internet, make a sales pitch to young girls, then go to the place and BE ARRESTED. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Clearly, you don't know the meaning of the word 'pedophile' any more than you know how to spell it.

the age of consent for commercial sex is 18 in every state - even where prostitution is illegal and the general age of consent is lower.

Do you agree?
You can't drive at 15 except in a few cases. Since you are in Texas you probably know that VERY few teens get their driver's license before 16. The trend in fact is to later.

But nowhere do you say what benefit might be had from lowering the age of consent? Is there something to be gained? Fewer rape cases? Is that a good thing?

Let the states make their own laws. It's not 18 in most states, as Redraven pointed out.
